| Culture Awards are still a quite unrecognized around the world and will probably never claim the fame of the Nobel prizes or the Oscars. Nevertheless, it is an important step in the right direction and the awards help recognize work, otherwise unnoticed. During the ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the first Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture was presented to two professors from Yemen and China. Additionally 4 new awards for preservation of "oral heritage" were introduced. They work for the so-called "intangible cultural assets", which came to international awareness in the last few years.
