"Americanization of French Canal+" - 2001.12.20 by WB

Until it was bought by the French Media giant Vivendi, Canal+ gained international admiration for its support of the European film industry. This all may change now, that Vivendi withdraws its support from film funding. Here at WebdaK, we really hoped, that buying the American Media company "USA Networks", Vivendi will use the chance to present more foreign movies in the USA through its newly acquired properties, but it seems, this was just a short dream and the now global player will use its Universal library to flood the European market further with US imports instead. Isn't this another example for why we cannot like this type of globalization, founded on big corporation interests? When even a French company cannot held up its roots, respect its culture and wants to deny further support for an industry it helped to strengthen in the first place... How sad, because this decision happens just when screenings of French movies are at an all-time high in the USA. It all seems to us a sure way of destroying a young flower, just when it is ready to blossom.
