| Africa's tree lost a giant leaf, writes allAfrica.com about the dead of Leopold Sedar Senghor. He became the first president of the newly independent Senegal in 1960, when he was already known for his poetry and his works on linguistics, politics and sociology. "Poetry has lost a master, Senegal a statesman, Africa a visionary and France a friend.", said French President Jacques Chirac. Senghor, who invented the term "negritude" was also an active politician through most of his life, even after voluntarily retiring from his presidency in the 80's, which was unusual for an African leader at that time.
