THE WORLD CULTURE JOURNAL | published by WebdaK Communications | ![]() |
| "Notes from the Road", by Erik Gauger is a collection of writings & photos from his various trips (mostly througout North America). It is a very nice example of a modern explorers diary and his web site won well earned praise by international critics. Nevertheless, in order to understand the cultures of the regions we are travelling, we need to go beyond simply exploring regions, areas and landscapes. In order to comprehend the true life of the people, we either need to interact with them - an interaction which goes beyond folklore showcases for tourists - or we can learn about their individual culture through true expressions of art, music, media. One authentic movie will bring us closer to cultural understanding than many pre-planned vacation tours - except, we ourselves are making the effort to communicate directly with "the locals".
