"Afghanistans main independent weekly reappears" - 2002.02.05 by WB

Free Press is important for the survival of any culture. It is good news, that 5 years after it was forbidden by the Taliban, the independent newspaper Kabul Weekly returned to the streets of the Afghan capital. It is also remarkable, that the first issue is printed in 4 languages: Dari, Pashtun, English and French.

With French support, "14 journalists with one computer, a printer and a scanner put together the new 10-page tabloid. Some 2,500 copies were printed for sale in Kabul at 2,000 afghanis each -the price of a loaf of bread. The paper is one of the first independent media to appear in the wake of the Taliban defeat. The editor is Mohamad Fahim Dashty, who survived the bomb attack that killed Northern Alliance chief Ahmed Massoud."
