| "David Zucchino from the LA Times reports about how the Taliban forced local Afghans to collaborate during the destruction of the giant Bamiyan Buddha statues in March 2001: "The destruction required an extraordinary effort, so complex that foreign explosives experts had to be brought in and local residents were forced to dangle on ropes over a cliff face to chip out holes for explosives."
Reading the acoount of the villagers shows how important the Reconstruction of the Buddhas has become, in order to save a symbol of the important early interactions between East and West along the Silk Road.
