In the long cruel human history, many traditional cultures were erased - often through genocide. The Spanish conquistadors were some of the most thorough annihilators, when claiming the Caribbean for the Spanish crown. In his latest edition of "Notes from the Road", Erik Gauger mentions the forgotten culture of the Lucayans, who were extinct long before tourism industry discovered the Bahama Islands:
"The shame in all this is, of course, that there once existed another people. Enslaved, driven to extinction, the Lucayans were a brown race whose traditions and peculiarities are all but lost to history. At one time, they were Mongols, [...] They populated islands like Saint Lucia and Martinique until Carib Indians chased them north, to the much less hospitable Bahamas."
Almost no remains of this culture exisits and we are reminded yet again of the importance to preserve and support all work which is saving signs of original cultures…
